Just a short note for today. As soon as I can sit down long enough to map out the details, I will be having a blog contest coming up real soon and a blog follower drawing for 2012. Keep watch!
So far, our New Years Day 2011 winner has not checked in. If I don't hear from her by next Sunday, I will be drawing again so Claudia, if you are out there...please check in and claim your prize!
Hugs for the day!

Debbie, I was just looking at your Mohair on Art Fire & I have a another dumb question... You say,
ReplyDelete"The hair looks very wavy but when rooted with a fine needle, it lays very straight and stays that way. If rooted with a larger needle it then can have waves and curl."
Can you explain why this is so? One reason I have not purchased your mohair is because it looks wavy & I want straight. I was always confused when I saw the pictures of your beautifully rooted babies with STRAIGHT hair. Where did it come from & why didn't you use your own? Well that question was answered. It is yours. But how can the needle size make that kind of a difference?
Thanks
Thanks for another great question Kate!
ReplyDeleteIt is extremely rare to find straight kid hair..in fact, I've never seen it. Goat hair gets straighter as the goat ages~if it is going to go straight at all. Many sellers use yearling and adult hair as their straight hair but the fiber is thicker so it stands up more when rooted. It does not lay as flat.
The fiber of my baby kid hair is very, very fine. When rooted with a fine needle (I typically use a 42G Crown needle), the hair is rooted just 1-2 hairs at a time (depending on how one roots of course). The hair does not have "bulk" if rooted this way so it cannot maintain the waves. But use a larger needle that will root 3+ hairs into each hole and the hair then has bulk. I have only ever used hair from the farm I buy from for my babies. I don't select and reserve for myself specific locks, I usually use the measurements that are left-over from processing and offer up the 1/2 oz pks to other artists. One of the Med brown pks I have available right now is the same hair I am rooting Jenna/Josiah with, just in a darker color. I'll be sure to share when he is all done so you can see how straight it is.
Keep those great questions coming and thank you!
Hugs, Debbie
