Create-a-babies...CREATED! Coming soon....

I posted quite some time ago about the new
Create-a-Babies business.

Well, I saw these little cuties at the Down East Doll Show and got to thinking about a way to resolve fulfilling a request sent by many from my website.

So many people are looking for inexpensive "reborn" dolls.
Although the Create-a-Babies don't have a lot of color, the sculpts are high quality and adorable, as are the eyes, wigs and outfits.

I thought with a little enhancing...a bit more paint, some eye lashes and gloss along with more refined weighting throughout the doll, these charmers might fill a popular request at an affordable price.

So as soon as I get my first shipment and have some time to get a few ready,
Create-a-Babies...CREATED!  Will be added to my website for immediate purchase.

I am quite certain this won't happen until after the Sauder Village Ohio show in August but it's exciting to think about it none-the-less.

In the meantime, it's mohair madness around the nursery!

Sharing my collection Friday...on Thursday??

Yes, on Thursday!  LOL
We are leaving the house early in the morning tomorrow
(to run for 6 hours so we can eat pancakes afterwards~crazy right???)
so I thought I'd take time to post the newest babies to my collection today.

Please meet two new mini OOAKs by Sharon Robinson Ullrich:

First is Deborah.
I kept walking by Sharon's table and this little one just kept calling me in.  Finally I stopped to take a closer peek and noticed that he name is Deborah, the same as mine.  How could I pass her by?

And Sharon gifted me with this precious little Bundle Baby who I named Amy:

I am a very happy "mommy"!!!

Have a terrific weekend!

End of the week of back to work

Today is my "Friday" and will end a 40 hour week, IF I decide to work all day  :)

There is a local rodeo calling my name...It's the 4th of July after all!

Not working in the evenings has made me feel as if I didn't get anything accomplished this week, but I know in reality I did.

I've got many ounces of mohair banded up with some of it washed.
I prepped two new kits:  Saoirse by Bonnie Brown and Trinity by Lorna Miller Sands.

I've re-photographed prototype Nigel and sent her home.
I sent Noah John home.
I'll be sending Amethyst home.

I've updated my website some.
I've purchased my flight to the show at Sauder Village and made ground transportation arrangements.

I've organized the supplies I brought home in my luggage but you would not know that as yesterday, three boxes arrived via UPS from NC with more babies and supplies.  I think I can get through those boxes before I head out for the rodeo...IF I in fact go.

As far as the evenings and last weekend have gone: I've changed some of my personal dolls.
I've cleaned out flower gardens, planted new flowers, filled up the dog's pool and weeded the dog "kennel"  (that section of the back yard devoted to the dogs), gone on two fun runs out in the woods with my husband, step-son and some friends, and did many household chores~some of which have needed attention for a long time.

Ahhh...now that I see it all in black and white, I can say it's been a great and productive week!

Happy 4th of July!

My biography :)

Here is my "biography" exactly as I wrote it for the "magazine" I was told would be submitted to:

Bio for Debbie Henshaw
They Never Grow Up Nursery
March 2012

Hello!  My name is Debbie Henshaw.  I am the reborn doll artist at
They Never Grow Up Nursery.  Where babies are babies…Forever!

I am happily married to the love of my life and live in the small town of Baker City Oregon, in the United States.

Life has been an amazing journey and it seems that the journey will full circle in the end.  At least at this moment, as a 47 year old, this is how I see it.

Looking back, the formation of my life, what I would do with it and how it would “full circle” started when I was a little girl.

As a little girl, I LOVED babies, baby dolls and every kind of baby item.  Sounds reasonable for a little girl doesn’t it?

My mom managed apartments when I was in the 4th-6th grades.  Anything “baby” that was left behind she gave to me to play with.  That was such a delight to me!

I began babysitting when I was just 10 years old and remember that after I put the children and babies to sleep at night, I would “help” the working mom by sorting through the children’s and baby’s clothing, neatly folding them and placing them in the drawers.

In the 6th grade, I was assigned to write and illustrate a book in an age group of my choosing.

My choice was for pre-school age children.  The story about a baby ant that was born sibling-less and lonely.  His parents loved him.  They had every type of baby item that was needed for his care and spent a great deal of time with him, yet the little ant remained lonely.

When he was three, his parents gave him siblings.  He was elated!  The parents multiplied the baby items needed for their growing family.  The moral of the story was patience…and I got to draw all kinds of baby things!

I did not know it at the time but this book mattered in my Circle of Life.
I still have the book.

When I was in Jr. High, I worked for an elderly woman in her home.  Not only did she let me dress her live cat in baby clothes, she shared her amazing doll room with me!  It was then that I dreamed of having a doll room and collection myself.

My favorite subjects in high school were debate and public speaking.

The high school years came and went.  I applied for college.  I desired to be a kindergarten assistant.  I was accepted and at the same time, also found out that I was expecting my second child.   My desire was stronger to be available for my growing family so I declined my acceptance.

I spent the next 20 years working part time at jobs that I loved, raising my kids as well as co-raising 3 step-kids.

One day while shopping at Costco, a large, stuffed rabbit jumped into my cart.  (What???  YOU don’t have items jump into your cart when shopping???)  I had MORE fun dressing that rabbit up to amuse the kids!  They just about died of embarrassment the day I put him in “big boy underwear” and placed him in the cherry-wood high chair that was given to me as a house-warming gift.  “Buttons” soon became a family favorite.   I still have him…and the high chair.

My kids knew of my doll room/doll collection dream, and in 2002, when I was turning 38 years old, my youngest step-daughter gifted me with a manufactured Berenguer LaBaby baby doll~the first official doll in my collection.   She could not wait to give me that doll and I have loved her dearly!  I still have “Kara Ann” and our family has had a wonderful time with her.   I would pose her in whimsical ways that would capture the attention of the family and any visitors.

Soon though, I desired to have a baby boy doll in my collection.  I asked my husband for one that following Christmas.  He began his search on eBay.  Wow, were there ever a lot of choices and he was confused!  He asked me to help and it turns out, he was not the only one that was confused!  I was not familiar with all of the different types of materials that dolls were made of and we ended up choosing a 23” porcelain doll named Jamie.  I adore Jamie and still have him, even though he is not my favorite medium.

We added to my collection over the next several months adding Welcome Home Emily and Michael the Little Slugger from Ashton Drake.

And I kept looking at dolls on eBay, who knew there were so many dolls out there?!?!?  Due to the eBay browsing, I soon discovered the new art of reborn dolls!  I was intrigued and baffled about them at the same time!   I could not wrap my head around WHY people were taking these already beautiful dolls apart (like Emily, Micheal and my precious Kara) and changing them!

As the art progressed and the dolls became more life-like, I got it!  I studied every auction, every term, and every photo as well as researched everything I could find about reborning dolls.  I did this for well over 2 years as I was so mesmerized by it.  I had no intention of trying my hand at it but one day, it just occurred to me that I COULD try this.  With the prodding of a dear friend in the Philippines, They Never Grow Up Nursery was established in February of 2005, and the first two dolls began.

It took me until the end of March to finish my first doll, Abby.  Although I was a skilled cake decorator for more than 20 years, I never painted anything but the walls in my house! I stripped her oil paint three times!  It was during all those strippings and re-doings that I began to develop what has become my trademark multi-dimensional skin tone layering.

I had purchased some mohair to root Abby’s hair with but it only took a few pokes of the needle to realize that what I bought was NOT quality hair as said to be.  I located a small angora farm just 60 miles from my home and have been purchasing hand selected hair from that farm ever since.  It took some time but I eventually became skilled enough with processing the hair that I now sell it all over the world to many top reborn and silicone doll artists.

Abby sold for $87.50 to a new mommy in Canada.  As much as I hated to part with her, the joy her “mommy” expressed when she received her spurred me onward.

My next doll, Caleb, was even better than the Abby and I only had to strip him once!

Even though my studies had helped me to quickly progress in the art, there are always new things to learn and try so one never really “arrives”.    Each day of my work is more exciting and passionate than the last and I have those things which I love…baby dolls, baby clothes and baby things around me at all times.  My personal collection exceeds 75 dolls now!

At the time of this writing, I am in my 7th year of reborning.  During the first two years of my adventure, I worked part time outside the home.  In November of 2007, I left the “work field” and have been running my reborning and mohair processing business full time ever since.   I’ve never worked harder, or longer, in my life!  But it brings great joy not only to me, but to my customers as well, making all the hard work worth it.   I have placed reborn babies all over the world and have met so many wonderful people in the industry from all over the world.  I’ve attended IDEX for 6 of the 7 years I have been involved in this amazing art and delight being with my all of my friends and peers once again.  Several of my customers have become my best friends.  I am so blessed!

I am an advocate for the reborn and doll art industry.  If there is scamming going on, I will call it out.  I do not tolerate back-biting and cattiness amongst artists and within groups.  I will speak out when I see someone being taken advantage of and I will always support and defend the artist and his/her means of living.  This must have come from my enjoyment with debate class in high school!

In my spare moments, one of my greatest joys is writing pictures stories using my personal dolls as the subjects.  I share these online and in international doll magazines and have had more fun than is probably legal writing these stories!  I own and ride horses who have often found themselves involved in the picture stories as well.  Do you suppose my little book from the 6th grade had anything to do with these stories?  How about dressing the cat up and staging “Buttons” the rabbit to amuse the kids?

It is my utmost delight to mention here that at the present time, I have three beautiful grand children.  Just last week, the oldest one sent me, via text message from her phone, her first self arranged picture stories!  That fully delighted me!  I posted them on my blog (www.theynevergrowupnursery.blogspot.com) as “Jena’s picture story #1 & 2.

My peers and the public have awarded me the title of “Master Artist”, to which I am most honored and work every day to live up to.  I’ve been awarded much recognition for my work including 2009 Tiny Treasures Reborn Baby of the Year and a 2009 Colliii nomination.  These days, it is difficult for me to compete in competitions, as I am so busy just trying to keep up with all of the other aspects of my reborning.  However, paying utmost attention to every fine detail, I strive in making each reborn baby an exceptional piece of artwork and an award winning creation!

I have had the thrilling honor of reborning prototype babies for so many amazing sculpting artists over the years few years.  I constantly have to pinch myself to assure that this has been really real!  Who me???

I have a huge passion for teaching the art (see…I did fulfill my desire to teach~I simply am not teaching kindergarteners!) and hold live classes all around the United States at show venues.  I dream of teaching internationally as well, and am tentatively planning on teaching and showing at the Peterborough show in the UK in October 2012.
I’ve taught several private, one-on-one full reborn courses in my home studio/nursery .

With the love of writing and passion for the doll art industry, I’ve been asked to write articles for several doll magazines.  The articles have ranged many different topics and have included reborning tutorials.

The production of my first Full Reborn Course DVD set is happening as I write this article!  This will be a great asset to those who cannot travel to the locations where I am teaching, and covers each and every reborn step from beginning to end.  It was my GREATEST honor to film this video in the studio of world-renowned porcelain doll artist, Dianna Effner as I taught her the reborn techniques on her first vinyl kit, Huggy Bear.    A great honor and a dream come true!  By the way, Dianna did an exceptional job on her reborn Huggy Bear.  Of course that is not too surprising, being the wonderful artist that she is.

The Reborning Course DVD set will be available from my website www.theynevergrowupnursery.com and also on my ArtFire selling site

where you can also find my premium acid dyed angora mohair and helpful LDC air dry paint color guides.

Be sure to check out my free LDC Air Dry paint tutorial on the Doll Dreams and Pupen-Traumland websites:

My babies are available either on eBay under user ID redcar_99, on my website and at live shows across the US and hopefully abroad soon.

As I continue to reborn, teach, process mohair and share picture stories I know that someday I will need to retire from these things.  Well most of them anyway!  When I retire from my current work, I have decided that I will be writing picture stories for children using the dolls in my personal collection as the subjects.    My husbands questions as to why I do not do this already.  The answer…TIME!

So the babies, baby dolls and real baby items of so long ago did matter.  That little book did matter.  The dressing of the cat and the visits to the doll room did matter. Debate class did matter.  Desiring to teach did matter.  Amusing my kids with the big stuffed rabbit in underwear did matter.  Being a perfectionist in my cake-decorating career did matter.  Reborning has mattered and has had a place in my Circle of Life.  It has been the tape that secured the ends of that circle together.

Baby Nigel as a girl??

YES!

I was asked if Prototype Nigel by Lilianne Breedveld would make a nice girl.
I have to admit, I sure did not think he could but once I dressed him up in a dress, my mind changed quickly!

The customer loved her too and adopted her!

She's going home today  :)

Baby hugs~

The Down East Doll Show in review

What an incredible week!  The first annual Down East Doll Show was such a success!

My hat is tipped to Gia Heath; founder and chief in charge, Stacey Haskins and Lisa Lovern-Farmer!  These three ladies worked so very hard to make this a pleasant experience for each and every artist that attended.  And boy did the artists come!

The artists that I had the time to meet for the first time were:
Sandra Maxwell (what a HOOT this lady is!!!)
Evon Nather (so love her passion and appreciation for the art..and…ME!)
Linda and John Murray (John was brave enough to wear a make-shift hat during the baby shower…what a guy, and Linda is the essence of elegance)

Lacey Michelle and her wonderful Dark and Twisty babies~amazing!
Kate Charles (to see her work in person was fantastic and she’s such a smart and witty gal)
Daria Makarenova who is Russian but lives in California….(Look out for this wild one!  She’s got more energy than Oregon has windmills!)
Grace Lang (Gosh, that was so wonderful having “known” her for so many years
Sherri Boere from South Africa (who gave me a beautiful Rhino charm that I now wear proudly on my purse~what a great gal she is!)
Oh I am sure I met more new friends than this but I was SO brain dead all of the days of the show and it's all so surreal to me now that I just don't remember.

Of course is was wonderful to spend time with all of the artists that I already know and love.  We had SUCH a great time!!!

I simply LOVE the South and that good ole’ Southern Hospitality!  If one wants to be pampered and treated with utmost courtesy and respect, then Greenville, North Carolina is the place to go.  The City Hotel and Bistro was a nice yet inexpensive place to gather.  The staff worked hard to please and “knew” you even before the 2nd day had passed.  The rooms were clean and the breakfast bar quite adequate.  They aim to please and pamper and I, for one, enjoyed it.

The Greenville airport is super tiny...with only 2 gates and one lounge to wait for either of the two gates.  They had several of those "Cracker Barrel" type rocking chairs set by the big windows looking out onto the air strip...which had hardly any planes coming and going~it was awesome!  Becky and I relaxed in the big 'ole chairs and just enjoyed the peacefulness of it all.

On Wednesday night, we enjoyed a home cooked meal at Gia’s house.  Her family is amazing!  They had this big spread of delicious food and aimed to delight us.  Gia had the help of Tanya McDowell to prepare and well, they all make a dynamic team!  Gia blessed each teacher with a beautiful bouquet of flowers that I then blessed the front desk gal at the hotel with when I left.  They were still SO beautiful that I simply had to share them!

This is the welcome banner that was made for the entrance of the Convention Center.  Gia had it on her front porch for the get-together:
Tanya made this ADORABLE baby fruit bowl for both the get-together and for the Baby shower on Sunday.
The converted garage of Gia's house where the dining area was held.  Festive and inviting.  All the cribs and things in the background were later used in her display at the show.

Bonnie Brown brought her personal Saoirse reborn by the talented Rachel Ambler.  Oh my gosh...this baby, and this kit are TDF!  I can't wait to do mine.

My two-day class was fantastic and my student did such a wonderful job on her little Jessica Schenk triplet.  This sweet and humble lady didn’t think she would do all that well but I am SO impressed!

Mine is on the left, her's is on the right:

The one-on-one atmosphere was delightful….well, it was mostly one-on-one.  Many people stopped by to ask various questions regarding my techniques, the LDC paints and reborning in general.  This added to my students education and prompted a few people to purchase my newly released DVD.  We had that DVD playing at my booth, which many thought was very explanatory and detailed.

During set up and day one of the show, my precious friends basically set up my booth and ran it for me  during  my absence during class.    I am always amazed at their helpful spirits and hard labor.  Thank you Sally and Becky!  I could not be blessed with better friends and I love you both.  XXOO  (Miss you already too!)

The lighting was terrible in my spot so all of the pictures of my babies are terrible but I'll share anyway.

Some thought that my Matthew prototype looked like a girl so we went out and purchased girl clothing for him/her.  I am torn, I like him both ways but since Jorja Pigott loved him as a girl, I think I will add to the layette and do a photo shoot as a girl:

By this time, I was pretty brain dead and probably didn’t tweak my booth enough to fully showcase each baby.  Risers in the back would have been good   There were SO many people coming into the booth while I attempted to tweak!  I finally put the chairs across my booth around 8:30 pm to keep people out as I was just getting too tired and could not function.

I have better ideas for the next shows display.
(I am headed to Ohio the first part of August.)

I was at my booth the second day after attending a birthday breakfast with a friend, but I was still brain dead!  I talked to a lot of people, many of them artists wanting advice, tips and mohair.  I finally caught up with Lorna Miller-Sands to further discuss a special request she made of me about a month or so ago.   More on that in a later blog.

I taught a one-hour workshop on weighting the reborn.  I was amazed at the amazement of many of the ladies there who had never experience the level of teaching that I do and the techniques I have for creating proper balance in the reborn doll.  THAT was exciting and gave them a glimpse into the quality of teaching in my DVD.
So how were sales for me?  Well, only one baby was adopted and this did truly amaze me but did not discourage me…not entirely anyway.  For one, I did not have them really showcased very well.  There were so many incredible displays throughout the showroom floor that mine did not call attention too greatly.  That is the tragedy of traveling so far to do a show.  One can only pack and ship so much.

My dolls range in a higher price range and being a first time show in this area, many were looking for lower prices and really just checking it out.  Many dolls DID sell for other artists and I am delighted for them.

My email inbox has been exploding since the show.  This is typical whenever I go to a show and the dolls usually start selling right after the show.  I am not worried or discouraged like I said.   However, I may have come to a crossroads in my vision, passion and the future of my business.  More on that later.

(as of today, when I finally put this blog all together, two babies have been adopted out and a few more DVDs have sold.  All is well and good!)

I sold a LOT of mohair and my inbox is also full of requests for mohair plus I had a notebook at the show for artists to sign up to be placed on the mohair mailing list.

I sold several DVDs and expect many more sales as ladies stated that they had run out of show budget and would purchase one soon online.

So that is how things went for me but I have to tell you, the showroom was EXCITING!  The quality of artists that were there was stunning.  The showroom floor looked so professional and everyone was having a wonderful time.

Late night meals and gatherings in hotel rooms are always times that we all look forward too.  Sleep is over-rated at these shows!  But DO contribute to being almost too brain-dead to function.

And to be honest, I am done with that brain-dead feeling.  I HAVE to slow down so that I can focus.

Over the last few months I've been evaluating just where I fit in the reborn world.  I am very secure that I am a great artist, but I feel as if I do not have time to expand my talents and techniques and I greatly desire to do so.   I know that I have a passion for teaching the art and I know that my knowledge is desired by many.  I'm not trying to be arrogant here~just laying claim to the facts that lay evidently before me.

When SO many ladies came by my class and my booth (I mostly remember artists coming by my booth to ask questions, I vaguely remember collectors at all but I KNOW there were collectors on the show floor) and had so many questions to ask, it became more evident to me that teaching is the area I need to focus on.

When I was awarded with this beautiful award on Sunday during the awards ceremony, it pretty much "sealed the deal" for me in my thoughts.
 My immediate thought was:
"Lifetime Achievement Award??  After just 7+ yrs in the industry??
Does this mean I need to retire???"
LOL
No, that is not what it means but the award was given primarily based on the asset I have been to the reborn community, spending a great deal of my time teaching, guiding and providing excellent mohair.

(I was tricked by Gia into writing a biography that was SUPPOSED to be published in a magazine.  She needed this information from me and other potential candidates of the award in order for the judges to choose.  Since this Bio has not been published, I will be sharing it here on the blog sometime in the next week or so. :)

The award just confirmed my thoughts to focus more on the teaching aspect and to process even more mohair.

So what does that really mean?

One thing that it means is that I MUST MUST MUST learn how to do video clips (I just HAPPENED to sit by a lady on my first flight who brought up a conversation that took us into what she does...video editing!  She asked what type of computer I have (MacBook Pro) and excitedly asked me to get it out of the overhead compartment.  She then showed me how to make clips and upload them to various sites!  I still have to practice and really learn it but wow, this was so nice of Rachel!  I extend my heart felt gratitude to her!)
The first project is to gain some clips of my DVD to put live in various places so that people can view just a fraction of the DVD in order to make an educated decision to purchase it.  (By the way...comments are coming in from those who have already purchased it and they are LOVING it!)

I need to inquire about selling my DVD on Amazon.com.  I just need a bit of time for research of this project.

I also MUST MUST MUST learn how to do online classes!  This has been requested of me over and over again as the years have passed.  Most of you know that I simply am not all that technological...at all.

And I strongly desire to start the process of the children's picture story books.  This is a big dream of mine~a goal I will achieve.

 Will I stop reborning?
NO!  Not at all.  I will just slow down on the amount of dolls I make~cutting my numbers by more than 1/2, creating about 10 Master Artist dolls a year.  I will take more time to create each baby trying my hand at new and advanced techniques while video taping the process which will then be used for teaching.
(I may add a few more to the numbers in the form of Kids Corner Babies and Simple Treasures Babies especially around the time of shows and Christmas.)

And I will run the online classes while reborning the Master Artist Series dolls~after I learn how to do all of that.

So the structure of my days will change, as will my evenings.
Part of the brain deadedness comes from always having work in front of me, day and night.  My home is a mess as are my flower gardens.  My home is important to me.  I am a very clean and organized person but you would not know that by my home.  This has to stop in order for me to feel fully whole.  Balance is essential to any person.

I will still be working 40 hours a week on my reborn business, but no more than that.  I need the evenings to spend on my home, with my grandkids/kids/husband and with my animals.  None of us are getting any younger.  My horse is 30 years old and he has a bucket list that I need to help him fulfill  :)

Did I have a lot to say or what??
How about a few more pictures that I took at the show.  I didn't get around to many booths/tables but look at some of the eye candy that was there:

This is THE Juliette as brought in by a collector.  Oh my!  What a thrill it was to gaze on this highly sought after and gorgeous full-bodied silicone doll!
Claire Taylor "reborn" these two Ellie by Bonnie Brown silicone kits.  They are absolutely stunning!
Claire says they will go on eBay soon.  Someone is going to be VERY lucky to win them!!!
 This is Claire's personal Ellie:

And that's all I got from the show floor!  Pathetic, isn't it?

Here are some shots from my personal baby and my roommates personal babies:

Miss Sweet Pickles:
 Ready for the NC heat
 She found a silicone frog!
Hanging out at the baby shower:
Robin and Giovanni, owned by Becky:
Danene, adopted by Becky and playing at the baby shower:

Next years show will be moved to Durham, NC so that flights can come into the Raleigh/Durham airport.
Plans are already underway with more artists signing up and more collectors!!

I can't wait!
