Summer schedule starts today!

Whenever my husbands schedule changes, mine does too!

We are now entering the season that I like best: four 10 hour days a week! Of course, I do work more than 10 hours but I get SO much done while DH is at work for this many hours...and I love having three days off on the weekend. Our weekends are from Thursday-Saturday. We use one to one and a half days for chores and then play the rest of the time.

This next weekend, I will be writing that picture story for Discover Dolls. I am so happy to have some extra time to write picture stories!

It was GREAT to be home this weekend! I have uncluttered the house after our whirlwind of visitors and traveling around. It's going to be a great week!

Hugs!!

Precious Little Baby Dust Painting DVD

Cassie Peek and Rachel Maynard blessed me with a copy of their Precious Little Baby Dust painting DVD when we met at IDEX in January.

I have finally had the time to watch it and it is BRILLIANT! Even though I paint with LDC paints mostly, I have learned a few tips~especially on color correction that I (and anyone else) can apply to any types of paint they used. If you want to learn more about painting a reborn doll, I highly recommend this DVD~and while you are at it, purchase the rooting DVD as well. You will be glad you did!

I have a customer who does not like the Matte Varnish. I have to replace a set of limbs for her last custom doll as something went terribly wrong with the older Berenguer Vinyl (This is not on the most recent Berenguer {Daisy} that I made but one I made last summer using different Berenguer limbs). I am going to follow the DVD when I paint those limbs as I think Genesis paints might be a better choice for this particular older vinyl and I won't have to matte varnish them.

It appears that the three prototypes I am waiting for are running late which is a HUGE Godsend as I get Prototype Hillary, custom order MacKenzie and my taxes finished.

Hillary's photo shoot is today!

Happy Wednesday Hugs!

Actual expenses/profit from a recent reborn sale

$370.00

Grand total with artist pay: $604.83

Sold for $650.00

Traveling Fare (Buyer paid actual shipping of $58.50 so there was no cost to the artist)

Profit from Sale figuring that the artist is paid for her work: $45.17

This artist actually was paid for her time AND had a little bonus to her sale! Now, had she used a more expensive kit that bonus would have been gobbled up. She was wise on this creation keeping her kit and clothing costs low (the clothing costs were low but wow were the outfits ADORABLE! I saw the baby and auction). This sale had a happy ending...well almost. These figures do not calculate the fact that the artist will have to pay about a 1/3 of her actual income earned to...taxes.

Edited to add:

Speaking of taxes...I am working on mine this week (and last). Wow. I really should get a real job! LOL I will have to share later what my total sales vs expenses were for 2010. It blows my socks off every year.

While I was assembling prototype Hillary, taking her pictures and listing her on eBay, I realized that these time factors were not figured into the hours of creating the baby mentioned above. I spent an ENTIRE day and evening doing those three things with Hillary. So you can add on another 10-12 hours of labor for that, dropping the "profit" from the above doll down lower.

I looked up the term "profit" in Funk and Wagnalls dictionary:

"Any advantage or gain; benefit."

"Excess of returns over outlay or expenditure."

"The return from the employment of capitol after deducting the amount paid for raw materials and for wages, rent, interest etc.~gross profit"

"The excess of receipts from sales over expenditures for production or purchase.~net profit"

Some think it is wrong for reborn artist to "work" for profit. I think it is clear that we don't work for profit at all! We work because we love the act of creating beautiful reborn dolls and making people happy.

In Other Nursery News:

I will be finishing up Prototype Hillary this morning. Her glosses will dry today and I'll take her pictures tomorrow and get her on eBay! Whew this one has been a LONG birth...and a difficult one at times! I chose really fine kid mohair for her which took a long time to root, kept tweaking the hair line, had problems with my glues setting the eyes in and rooted tiny lashes to her open eyes. I am very pleased with her in spite of the troubled birth and can't wait to show her off.

While she dries today, I will begin rooting on a custom order doll...the 2011 Drawing baby. Can't wait to show her to you as well. It's been an absolute delight reborning this little one for my 2011 winner!

Hugs for the day!

The cost of a reborn doll

Of course I think of this subject alot, especially when I am asked to complete a reborn for $100.

You know, when a person purchases a reborn doll, they are not purchasing just vinyl and cloth. They are purchasing TWO artists creations; that of the sculpting artist and that of the reborn artist. Yes there are actual momentary expenses the artist contributes to each doll and then she sure hopes to get paid for her hourly contribution, just like anyone one would who is in the working sector.

There is an interesting post on Doll Fan right now. I agree with most of the statements from both sides of this issue. And you really should read all the posts as one artist broke down what it cost her to reborn a Kristaleta sculpt with her time figured in a a mere $10 an hour. I usually calculate my time in at $10 an hour as well even though, I could make $8.50 an hour in Oregon flipping hamburgars at McDonalds and have NO expenses involved in that job...other than taxes which I pay on my business anyway so it's all the same.

I do strongly agree that it looks tacky to have a break down list because we are ARTISTS~but we are at the mercy of the consumer and consumers need to be educated so that we can hold our heads up high and feel pride in our asking prices. We don't like the constant questioning and need to justify our work. But many do believe they are purchasing just vinyl and cloth, just like the dolls you can purchase at Walmart.

Tomorrow I am going to post a list that a dear friend shared with me on a recent reborn that she made and sold. She is very meticulous about keeping track of her expenses for each doll, which I am not, and kindly shared this list with me after we were talking one day about the expenses of reborn dolls.

In the mean time, here is another interesting website post regarding buying and making reborns for cheap. Don't let the title fool you~we all know they are not cheap which is why she posted this:

~Cheap Reborn Dolls~

Until tomorrow....

Sharing my Collecton Friday~Marquelle

This is Marquelle! She is a reborn created from the Jonas sculpt by Eva Wakolbinger and Doll Dreams. She is very special to me as she is one of the last reborns that Auntie Dawn ever made. Auntie Dawn was a big time reborner in the doll world back in the earlier days and up until around August of 2006, which is when I bought Marquelle. Auntie Dawn is now Delta Dawn who sells angora mohair on eBay.

She is in the green in this picture:
And guess what? She is spoiled! :)

Hugs for the weekend! I'll be back on on Monday~taking the OOAK Grand Girl home~
